How to Open a Pomegranate

To start, you'll need a sharp knife and a large bowl. When cutting, be careful because the juice will stain your clothing!

  1. Cut off the top 1/2" or so.
  2. Score the skin of the pomegranate, by making five shallow cuts from top to bottom.
  3. In a large bowl, pull the pomegranate apart where you made the cuts. Fill the bowl with water, and hold the pomegranate underwater while pulling apart to minimize the amount of juice that will spray.
  4. Seperate out the seeds and enjoy!

A Bit of Pomegranate Mythology

Pomegranates have a rich mythology, symbolizing birth, death, and even eternal life. With its bulging red seeds, pomegranates have captivated many civilizations throughout the ages.

Iranians believe the forbidden fruit that tempted Eve in the Garden of Eden was in fact a Pomegranate. Ancient Egyptians were buried with pomegranates, and the prophet Mohammed believed it purges the system of envy and hatred.

It seems that pomegranates just might lead us on a path to world peace. Or maybe a peaceful marriage. Greeks traditionally break open a pomegranate at weddings, and the chinese eat candied pomegranate seeds to bless newlyweds.

How to Make Pomegranate Juice

This ones pretty simple:

Pick a ripe, medium sized pomegranate. Cut it in half. Squeeze it with any conventional juice squeezer. You should get about 4 ounces from each pomegranate.

Another way to do it is to simply seperate the edible part of the pomegranate, then crush it without removing the seeds. Place it on a jelly cloth, then squeeze the juice out.
